Jennie Syson

About

Jennie Syson is an independent curator and writer. She is the founding director and curator of Hinterland, a series of site specific contemporary art projects in Nottingham and is currently co-ordinating the fringe to the British Art Show 7, Sideshow. As co-editor of Nottingham Visual Arts, she manages an online magazine, newsletter and listings website dedicated to the contemporary Nottingham art scene.

Currently based at One Thoresby Street Studios, running an artist library and Reading Room, she is part of a collection of emergent and established artists, galleries, project spaces and studios  located in Sneinton, Nottingham. The building hosts an ambitious and innovative programme of contemporary art exhibitions, events and activities involving local, national and international artists and curators.

Jennie consults on a number of curatorial projects within Nottingham and beyond and is currently a participant and co-curator of parksinprogress in collaboration with Pépinières Européennes in St.Cloud, Paris.  She is a consultant curator for Multistory, devising a dynamic and high profile site-specific contemporary art programme for West Bromwich community arts organisation in the Black Country; and Curatorial advisor for Broadway Cinema’s digital art programme. Most recently she has been working with Contemporary Art Society as a consultant for major artists commission in Sneinton Market with Neville Gabie.

Over the past 6 years she has also worked on a number of international exhibition projects and events including Extreme Crafts with Catherine Hemelryk at CAC in Vilnius, Lithuania, 2007.

A graduate from the MA Curating Contemporary Art at The Royal College of Art in 2004, she co-curated Britain Bombs America, America Bombs Britain at IBID Projects, London, 2003 and This much is certain at The Royal College of Art Galleries, London, 2004.

Previous curatorial roles have included Exhibitions Officer at QUAD/Q Arts; Programme Manager at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester, and curatorial intern and assistant at Listafn Reykjavik, Iceland. During 2008, Jennie assisted Nottingham Contemporary director Alex Farquharson with the research and development of a pre-opening programme and the delivery of a series of off-site events in the period leading up to the launch of the new building.
